FAQ - frequently asked questions

Why is a tax-free Dutch car often cheaper?
In the Netherlands cars, as well as carrying VAT, are also taxed with BMP [Private Motor Vehicle and Motorcycle Tax]. Most European countries do not have this luxury tax. The price of a car without tax - after deduction of BMP and VAT therefore - is for that reason virtually always lower than in other countries. In many cases Netherlands Car Trading [NCT] is able, depending on the make and the model of the car, to offer a discount on the tax-free price. All things considered, the purchase of a tax-free car from NCT could bring you a real price advantage.

When am I eligible for a tax-free car?
As a private person you are able to purchase a car tax-free just like diplomats and military personnel. The condition is that you live and/or work abroad for at least 12 months. You are also eligible if you intend to reside (permanently) abroad.

What about the payment to NCT?
You must have paid for the car in full before you collect the car. This can be done via the bank, by cheque(s) or in cash. When paying by cheque(s) or in cash, extra costs will be charged to you.

Where do I pay the tax on my new car?
That depends. Private persons usually pay VAT when importing the car. Diplomats do not pay tax.

When I return, can I import the car tax-free?
Yes that is possible! To that end the duration of your stay abroad must have been at least 12 months and in addition your car must have been used with the foreign vehicle registration certificate for at least 6 months.

Does the car come with warranties?
NCT supplies all cars with the relevant manufacturer's warranty.

What about maintenance?
You can refer to any dealer of the relevant make for a maintenance schedule in accordance with the instructions of the manufacturer.

How do I use a provisional vehicle registration certificate?
Depending on the make of the car, NCT supplies provisional vehicle registration certificates which are valid for 7 or 14 days, 1 month or longer. With the vehicle registration certificate for 1 month you can use your car in the whole of Europe for that period. The same does not however apply to the 7 and 14 days vehicle registration certificate. With those you more or less have to drive straight to your destination.

Can I buy a right-hand drive car at NCT?
Yes that is possible. NCT supplies various makes with this specification.

Are there differences in equipment requirements between the cars per country?
Depending on, for example, statutory provisions, the equipment requirement standard can indeed differ per car, per country. You always have the option of ordering any additional equipment you require for your car.

How quickly is NCT able to supply a car?
Delivery time depends on the make, model and options. In the most favourable case, NCT needs about one week to arrange the provisional vehicle registration certificate, the insurance and any possible export documents.

Which makes of car does NCT supply and which not?
Normally NCT is able supply all makes; from Alfa Romeo to Volvo.

What is a C.I.S.-specification?
This specification is intended for countries with cold weather conditions. This includes: a fortified battery, starting motor and generator.

What is a Tropics specification?
This includes: strengthened suspension, crankcase protection (plate at underside of the engine), tyres with inner tubes, adjusted engine cooler and the absence of a catalytic converter.
